Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 1 medium green bell pepper diced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 3 cans (14 oz / 400g) baked beans
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper

Instructions

  • Heat the oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat and sauté the onion and green bell pepper for 3-4 minutes until slightly softened.
    1 tablespoon olive oil
    1 medium onion
    1 medium green bell pepper
  • Add the ground beef and cook until no longer pink, breaking it up with your spoon as you go.
    1 pound ground beef
  • Stir in the baked beans, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, garlic powder, salt and ground black pepper. Give everything a good stir until fully combined.
    3 cans (14 oz / 400g) baked beans
    ½ cup ketchup
    ¼ cup brown sugar
    2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
    1 teaspoon mustard
    1 teaspoon garlic powder
    1 teaspoon salt
    ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Bring to a simmer, then lower the heat, cover the pot with a lid and cook for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Once the sauce is nice and thick, adjust the seasoning to taste and serve hot.

Notes

  • Use regular ground beef, not extra-lean. The fat adds flavor and keeps the sauce from tasting dry; drain excess grease only if there’s a lot of it.
  • Simmer gently with the lid on. A hard boil will break down the beans and reduce the sauce too fast.
  • Always taste before seasoning. Canned baked beans vary in sweetness and salt, so adjust with a pinch of salt or a splash of Worcestershire at the end if needed.
